Authors are encouraged to submit new papers to INFORMS journals by means of a style file template, which includes the journal title. However, use of a template does not certify that the paper has been accepted for publication in the named journal. INFORMS journal templates are for the exclusive purpose of submitting to an INFORMS journal and should not be used to distribute the papers in print or online or to submit the papers to another publication.

Online Supplement to Are Call Center and Hospital Arrivals Well Modeled by Nonhomogeneous Poisson Processes?
We present supporting material in this online supplement to the main paper. In §2 we define the CU and Lewis KS tests of an NHPP that we consider in the main paper. In §3, we illustrate how departures from the Poisson property can have a strong impact upon performance via simulation experiments. In §?? we give the results from addtional experiments on rounding and un-rounding. In §5 we provide ...
متن کاملExact Statistical Inference for Some Parametric Nonhomogeneous Poisson Processes
Nonhomogeneous Poisson processes (NHPPs) are often used to model recurrent events, and there is thus a need to check model fit for such models. We study the problem of obtaining exact goodness-of-fit tests for certain parametric NHPPs, using a method based on Monte Carlo simulation conditional on sufficient statistics. A closely related way of obtaining exact confidence intervals in parametri...
متن کاملPoisson and non-Poisson properties in appointment-generated arrival processes: The case of an endocrinology clinic
Previous statistical tests showed that call center arrival data were consistent with a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) within each day, but exhibit over-dispersion over multiple days. These tests are applied to arrival data from an endocrinology clinic, where arrivals are by appointment. The clinic data are also consistent with an NHPP within each day, but exhibit under-dispersion over m...
متن کاملAbstract: Network arrivals are often modeled as Poisson processes for analytic simplicity, even though a number of traffic studies have shown that packet interarrivals are not exponentially distributed
Network arrivals are often modeled as Poisson processes for analytic simplicity, even though a number of traffic studies have shown that packet interarrivals are not exponentially distributed. We evaluate 24 widearea traces, investigating a number of wide-area TCP arrival processes (session and connection arrivals, FTP data connection arrivals within FTP sessions, and TELNET packet arrivals) to...
متن کاملDensity Forecasting of Intraday Call Center Arrivals Using Models Based on Exponential Smoothing
A key input to the call center staffing process is a forecast for the number of calls arriving. Density forecasts of arrival rates are needed for analytical call center models, which assume Poisson arrivals with a stochastic arrival rate. Density forecasts of call volumes can be used in simulation models, and are also important for the analysis of outsourcing contracts. A forecasting method, th...
